Is PSLF going away?
Short answer: No. As of November 5, 2026, Public Service Loan Forgiveness still exists: 120 qualifying payments while working full-time for a qualifying employer, then the remaining Direct Loan balance is forgiven tax-free federally. P.L. 119-21 did not repeal PSLF, and RAP payments count toward it. ED has issued rules on which employers qualify, and those rules face legal challenges — watch for updates.

What changed
- RAP payments qualify for PSLF; Tiered Standard payments generally do not unless on a 10-year schedule.
- ED rulemaking on employer eligibility has been published and is being contested; your employer's status could be affected only under those specific rules.
What to do
- Keep certifying employment with the PSLF Help Tool on studentaid.gov.
- Stay on a PSLF-qualifying plan (RAP, IBR, or 10-year Standard).
- Estimate months left and forgiveness with the PSLF scenario in the calculator.
